CRUSH THE BIKE WITH THESE TIPS
Triathletes are on average good cyclists. Most triathletes come from a swimming or running background but not a cycling background. The good news is, we have all been riding bikes since were young. We would go to school on our bikes, ride the local hill, race your friends, and use it as a mode for transportation. Then we start to race either at a young age or older as part of our health goals or competitive spirit.
However, the lack of riding technique and style was never taught unless you raced at your local criterium or in college.

This is something you are either good at or not. Fear is usually the main factor in not being good at descending at high speeds. However, this is something that you need to learn to be good at. The only way is through practice.
Find a local hill and hit it hard. When you get comfortable with one speed, amp it up the next decent.
Here is the deal, many athletes, especially at local races, will get to a decent and coast down either to rest or from being fearful of falling at high speeds. Now that half of the field is coasting, don’t you think it is a good time to fly?
Put it in a big gear, sit back on the saddle, stay relaxed and enjoy the FREE SPEED.
Climbing unlike descending is something that we work on through the season on the trainer or on the local hill doing leg burning intervals. We work hard on our aerobic conditioning and muscular condition to allow us to motor up those hills. But we do not practice hill climbing technique. I am not talking about cadence, seat position, and hand position, to stand or not to stand. I am talking about how to use the hill to your advantage.
Many athletes hit the base of the hill hard depending on momentum will carry them over the hill. They then end up red lining it and completely spend by the time they hit the top.
